Climate Impact

WHEN water heaters unite, everyone benefits, including our environment.

Our state-of-the-art system is young, but growing exponentially, and already demonstrating a real and lasting effect on carbon emissions in the Mid-Atlantic region.

In areas with high renewable energy goals, like Hawaii, California and Massachusetts, both policymakers and grid operators are confronting the need for more efficient energy storage solutions. It’s all about maximizing efficiency and lowering costs, while reducing environmental impacts. By better matching electricity supply and demand, Mosaic Power is able to make the most efficient use of electricity generation, storage, and distribution. We are leading the way in connecting affordable housing to a smarter grid, and a smarter grid means cleaner air, renewable energy, and a brighter future for us all.

In PJM’s electric grid, WHEN cuts the carbon pollution of each connected water heater:

FAQs on Climate Impact

Do all water heaters have the same carbon footprint?

No.  Each water heater’s carbon footprint – meaning the amount of carbon dioxide pollution each is responsible for – is dependent on the specific electricity generation sources that provide electricity for each location.  A water heater connected to an electric grid that uses primarily coal-fired electricity will have a greater carbon footprint than one that uses primarily hydro-power, for example.  Mosaic calculates the carbon footprint reduction value of WHEN based on the specific generation mix of each electric grid we are a part of.

How much energy can be shifted by this water heater network?

Our WHEN can achieve one kilowatt-hours per water heater every hour with no discernible impact to the participant.  For every 1,000 water heaters participating in WHEN, we achieve one megawatt-hour.  We distribute this energy deficit across our water heater network, which adds up to a large impact with thousands of connected water heaters.

I’ve heard of batteries…are you guys like batteries?

Like batteries, water heaters have energy storage potential in the form of thermal energy (hot water). The obvious difference is water heaters cannot put that thermal energy back on the electric grid like batteries do.  Water heaters CAN shift when they charge or heat – just like a battery.  And, unlike a battery, water heaters can discharge as hot water is used leaving more room for additional charging as needed.

If Mosaic doesn’t cut water heater’s electricity use, then how do you claim you cut carbon pollution?

Mosaic does not affect the total amount of electricity used by each water heater.  Instead, we shift when electricity is used to time that use, by the minute, with the needs of the electric grid.  By utilizing WHEN’s services, electric grids can reduce the need for expensive and polluting peaking power plants by meeting their needs with the energy storage potential of water heaters.  On PJM’s electric grid, WHEN uses the shifting of water heater electricity use to displace natural gas and other fossil fuels in PJM’s Frequency Regulation Market.

Why is energy storage important to a cleaner electric grid?

First, energy storage isn’t just important, it’s necessary.  We love renewable energy, but it depends on intermittent fuel sources that can’t simply be fired up and fired down.  The ability to store energy using a wide array of technologies allows the grid to make use of and buy renewable energy when it’s producing and deliver that energy when it’s needed. Any vision of a grid that runs on renewable energy must include energy storage as a key piece of utilizing and delivering that energy to homes and businesses.
